10 Reasons Most Americans Never Achieve Financial Freedom

Your Own Credit Score Can Take a Hit

Few Americans ever achieve financial freedom, yet many dream about it. With the resources, information, and tools at their disposal to make their financial situation better, so many just can’t seem to get out of the cycle of debt, living paycheck to paycheck, and financial stress. It’s not because they don’t have the ambition or the effort, in most cases, it’s a mixture of bad habits, bad ideas and not having a proper plan that stops most from achieving financial freedom.

To take control of your financial future you need to learn what is keeping you from achieving financial independence. Here are 10 reasons why most Americans never realize financial freedom and what you can do about it.

Inadequate Financial Planning

Most people don’t achieve financial freedom because they don’t have a financial plan. It’s hard to make informed decisions about how to save, invest and spend without a roadmap. Many people don’t know where to start or are overwhelmed by the complexity of personal finance. A well defined plan sets achievable goals, prioritizes how your money gets spent, and allows you to make strategic decisions.

Living Above Their Means

Living beyond your means is another major roadblock on your way to financial freedom. Americans earn more, and many of them blow it — on bigger homes, luxury cars and expensive vacations. Nothing is really wrong with living, but when you spend more than one, you are able to save and invest for future use. No matter how much money you make, the most important habit to develop is living below your means.

Not Saving for the Future

There are just too many Americans who don’t save for retirement or the future. Instead, they spend nearly all of their earned money on short term desires and instant pleasures and save very little. Saving and investing for the future the earlier the better is all about financial freedom. Putting money away in retirement accounts like 401(k)s and IRAs on a regular basis will give you the financial security you need when you’re not working anymore.

A Single Income Stream

One source of income is a huge roadblock to financial freedom. Today’s world economic conditions can change very quickly and people can be laid off or lose their jobs. Diversifying your income streams—whether it’s a side hustle, investments, or other passive income opportunities—does so that you have a financial buffer that will allow you to stay afloat when things aren’t so good.

Avoiding Budgeting

Budgeting is a very powerful tool which will help us to understand our spending patterns, track our expenses and ultimately control your finance. The problem is, unfortunately, most people avoid budgeting because they think it’s boring or restrictive. If you don’t have budget discipline, you’ll overspend, build debt and miss out on the chance to save. Budget keeps you on the right track for your financial goals.

Carrying High-Interest Debt

Credit cards, or other high interest debt, is one of the biggest obstacles to financial freedom. Many Americans have revolving credit card debt because of high interest rates. Debt of this kind can get out of hand very quickly and can make saving or investing very difficult. There is no way to build wealth until high interest debt is paid off.

Lack of Investment Knowledge

The thing is that many people don’t know how to invest their money wisely and that’s why they are not able to reach financial freedom. Investing in stocks, bonds, real estate, or anything else, is one of the best ways to grow your money. However, a lack of education or fear of loss of money turns many from iinvesting.

Fear of Risk

Risk management is important, but too many people are too averse to risk and don’t take the action necessary to build wealth. A lot of people are scared to lose money and therefore they don’t invest in higher return opportunities such as stocks or starting a business. There is always risk when you invest, but it’s important to learn about it, know what you are risking and what you can gain, and make calculated risks.

Failure to Build Good Credit

Your credit score basically determines how easy it is to get a loan or credit, and how cheaply. But many Americans just don’t build or maintain good credit. If you don’t have a good credit score, it’s harder to get good mortgage rates, good car loan, and good insurance terms. Your credit score can help you get lower interest rates and end up saving you money over time, so it’s something you should work to build and maintain.

Denial About Finances

A lot of people ignore their financial problem and think it will fix itself. Sometimes, this mindset keeps you from taking advantage of opportunities to better your credit, pay down debt, and save money. If you don’t confront the reality of your financial situation, you won’t change and you won’t take the steps you need to take.

They Can’t Delay Gratification

One of the largest reasons why so many Americans never attain financial freedom is because they can’t delay gratification. When we spend money in short term pleasures rather than saving for long term financial stability, we end up with zero savings and lots of debts.
