13 Elon Musk Predictions That Still Haven’t Come True

Elon Musk Warns of “Financial Whiplash” as AI Stocks Hit Dangerous Highs—13 Moves to Protect Your Money Now

Elon Musk has built a reputation as one of the boldest visionaries in the tech industry. His public statements often blur the line between genius-level ambition and sci-fi level storytelling. Some of his predictions have led to real change, including reusable rockets, electric cars that no longer resemble golf carts, and solar roofs. But others remain just out of reach.

Over the years, Musk has made numerous promises with specific dates. Many were excited. Some were bizarre. And a few are still floating in limbo. Whether due to engineering challenges, financial constraints, or simply the passage of time, these predictions remain pending. Here are the ones that haven’t landed just yet.

Humans Living on Mars by 2024

In 2016, Musk told the world he believed SpaceX could send humans to Mars by 2024. That deadline has come and gone, and no crewed mission has left Earth. While Starship testing is progressing, it is still far from ready to send humans across 140 million miles of space.

In 2019, Musk claimed that Tesla would have one million robotaxis on the road by the end of 2020. These cars were supposed to drive themselves and generate passive income for their owners. Fast forward to today, and while Tesla’s Full Self-Driving software exists in beta, it still requires driver supervision. No regulatory body has approved it as fully autonomous. The idea sounded appealing to those looking for alternative ways to grow their savings, but the technology hasn’t yet delivered on that promise. For now, it’s still a waiting game.

Musk’s Neuralink company has promised to connect brains to computers and cure neurological conditions. In 2019, he predicted human trials would begin by 2020. As of now, only one person has received an implant as part of a clinical trial launched in 2024. According to the BBC, Experts have cautioned that Neuralink’s brain implants will require extensive testing to overcome technical and ethical challenges if they are to become widely available.

Hyperloop Travel at Airline Speeds

The Hyperloop concept involves moving people in pods through vacuum tubes at nearly 700 miles per hour. Musk described it in 2013 as a “fifth mode of transport” and predicted working tracks would appear within a few years. While student teams and private companies have tested small-scale versions, no commercial line has been built. According to SmartCitiesDive, hyperloops would require the construction of entirely new transportation infrastructure.

Solar Roofs Becoming Commonplace

Musk announced the Tesla Solar Roof in 2016, stating that it would soon be cheaper and more aesthetically pleasing than a standard roof with solar panels. Early excitement was high, but installations have remained limited. Tesla paused new installations in several areas in 2023. According to Canary Media, a report released by energy consultancy Wood Mackenzie estimates that Tesla has installed approximately 3,000 solar roofs in the U.S. since the product’s launch in 2016. That’s several hundred thousand roofs short of Musk’s forecasts.

Fully Autonomous Tesla by the End of 2021

Tesla’s Full Self-Driving software has undergone numerous iterations, but it is still not fully autonomous. Musk repeatedly said that the cars would be capable of self-driving without any human input by the end of 2021. According to a report by Consumer Reports, on a quarterly earnings call, Musk tells investors and reporters that he is confident FSD-equipped Teslas “will be able to drive themselves with the safety levels substantially greater than that of the average person. This never materialized. As of 2025, the software still requires driver attention.

Underground Tunnels Fixing Traffic

Musk’s Boring Company proposed building underground tunnels to beat traffic in major cities. One of the first tests opened in Las Vegas, offering rides in Teslas through a short tunnel loop. Musk had previously suggested high-speed travel through these tunnels, but so far, the cars are just driving at low speeds with human drivers.

Tesla Semi Trucks Dominating the Roads

The Tesla Semi was revealed in 2017, with promises of deliveries starting in 2019. Musk said the trucks would reshape long-haul freight by offering better range, speed, and lower costs. After several delays, PepsiCo received a few trucks in 2022, but mass production has yet to take off. Industry analysis from FreightWaves suggests that full production may not begin until late 2025, or possibly later.

AI That Can Talk to You Like a Friend

Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 with the mission of creating friendly AI. While language models like ChatGPT exist now, Musk later left OpenAI and criticized it for straying from its original goals. In 2023, he launched his own AI company, xAI, and claimed that its chatbot, “Grok,” would be smarter and more truthful than anything else. So far, it hasn’t shown any major leap beyond existing tools. Some investors hoped AI advancements would open new doors for ETF opportunities tied to emerging tech, but results like Grok’s have yet to move the needle.

Colonizing the Moon by 2025

Alongside his Mars predictions, Musk also said SpaceX would help establish a moon base soon after sending humans back there. NASA’s Artemis program aims to return astronauts to the moon by 2026, using SpaceX’s Starship as part of the mission. However, establishing a permanent presence is still far off. No current funding or plan exists for long-term lunar living beyond temporary visits. The high costs involved raise questions about priorities on Earth, where many still struggle with basic budgeting and daily financial stability.

Superchargers Running on 100 Percent Solar

Back in 2017, Musk tweeted that all Tesla Supercharger stations would eventually run entirely on solar power and battery storage. While some stations have solar panels, most still rely on grid electricity. The transition has been slower than expected, raising questions about feasibility. Tesla has made progress with solar canopies at select locations. But a large-scale shift to off-grid charging is still far off.

In 2020, Musk said Tesla was working on a fully electric car that would sell for $25,000. He mentioned it could arrive in 2023, using cheaper batteries and improved production methods. According to a report by CNBC, “We’re not currently working on the $25,000 car,” Musk said. ” At some point, we will. We have enough on our plate right now. Too much on our plate, frankly.” As of mid-2025, no such model has been announced or released.

High-Speed Internet from Space for Everyone

Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet project, aimed to provide affordable high-speed internet worldwide. While service has expanded and performance improved in many places, it hasn’t yet reached the price or coverage originally promised. 2024 According to PCMag, the average monthly cost for Starlink residential service in the U.S. is around $110, but speeds can be significantly slower in densely populated areas. Global affordability and rural access remain limited.
