Moving to a new state is more than just a change of address—it’s an opportunity for a fresh start, new adventures, and discovering what makes each place unique. Lately, some states have been standing out as magnets for Americans looking to relocate, driven by factors like job opportunities, cost of living, or even the allure of better weather.
Are you curious about where everyone’s heading and why these spots are topping the charts? Here are the 15 States where most Americans are relocating.
Texas

Texas continues to dominate the inbound-move rankings, with Austin and Dallas becoming the in-thing for young professionals. Why? No state income tax, affordable housing, or a buoyant job market exists. From the count of September 2021, it is estimated that Texas gained over 470,000 new residents just that year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Let’s not forget the brisket and wide-open spaces. “Texas is a rare combination of opportunity and quality of life,” said economist Mark Perry.
Florida

People were drawn into Florida, and why not? Who would want to miss the beach, warm climate, and no state income tax? The Sunshine State registered 318,000 new residents just last year. Miami’s party mode and Orlando’s theme park magic don’t hurt either!
For beachy places that don’t cost you an arm and a leg, think Tampa or Fort Myers.
Arizona

Low property taxes and sunny days attract more movers to Arizona. Arizona’s Housing affordability and robust tech economy make this state a growing relocation destination. New estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show that about 256,000 people moved into Arizona in 2023.
North Carolina

Want Southern charm with a tech flavor? North Carolina has got you covered. As the Research Triangle of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill becomes a tech hub, professionals are flocking here for jobs and relative affordability. Sarah Ramirez, relocation counselor, observes that, “North Carolina offers the best of both worlds—career growth and beautiful scenery.”
Since the Census in 2020, North Carolina has added 605,000 people. Also, thanks to its economic vigor, it has a population of more than 11 million.
Tennessee

The state is a perfect mix of culture and all things outdoors, from the groove of Nashville’s music to the chill of the Great Smoky Mountains. Add the absence of a state income tax, and you could see why people are flocking to Tennessee. 91,000 people came into the state in 2022, followed by 76,000 in 2023, an average of 80,000 new residents a year.
More than half of them cited job opportunities as their main reason.
South Carolina

South Carolina’s coastal beauty, combined with lower taxes and a friendlier cost of living, makes places like Charleston and Myrtle Beach a coveted destination. Almost 64% of all moves into South Carolina could be considered inbound; more people are moving into the state than leaving it, causing it to become a relocation hotspot.
“Affordable living is a big attraction for our new residents,” states State Demographer Mia Harper.
Georgia

Georgia isn’t just about peaches; it’s also about business. The population of Georgia in 2023 was 11,064,432, which is a 1.21% increase from 2022. Atlanta is a bustling job center for startups and major corporations like Coca-Cola and Delta Airlines. In addition to that, the affordability quotient compared to other metro areas make Georgia a perfect destination.
Also, don’t miss the food scene in Atlanta, OK? Seriously.
Colorado

Colorado attracts everyone, from adventure-seekers to ski-bums to health-conscious individuals. The tech boom in Denver and nature access in Boulder make the state a millennial magnet. Colorado gained about 21,293 people in 2023. Boulder regularly ranks in the happiest cities in the U.S. Coincidence? Think again.
Nevada

Nevada does not just gamble; it wins in drawing in residents. With no state income tax and a fast-growing economy, Las Vegas and Reno make the A-list. Families are attracted by the wide variety of schools and natural scenery away from the city’s hustle and bustle.
The population of Nevada in 2023 was 3,214,363, which is a 1.2% increase from 2022. “Nevada is tax-friendly and has plenty of opportunities without breaking your bank,” says relocation advisor Tom Grant.
Idaho

Idaho is no longer a concealed treasure. Its a buzz with great towns such as Boise that feature unbeatable affordability and an adventurous lifestyle outdoors. Migration data showed that 55% of all Idaho moves were inbound. If you enjoy hiking, fishing, and gorgeous mountain views, Idaho is the land of your dreams.
Utah

Utah is full of activity at present. Salt Lake City is booming with good schools and a healthy economy. Did we mention epic skiing? According to Numbeo, Utah is 4.7% cheaper than the U.S. average, making it even more alluring.
Washington

Washington is hard to resist with its deep economy and stunning views. It saw an influx of almost 110,000 new residents in 2022. Seattle remains the center of all tech jobs, with Amazon and Microsoft calling it home. Coffee culture, of course, runs deep. But, back to the nature lovers, they will find untouched wilderness in a couple of hours’ drive.
Oregon

Oregon holds verdant landscapes and progressive lifestyles that lure artists, free spirits, and nature lovers alike. It’s no wonder Oregon remains in strong contention. In 2023, some 125,246 people moved into Oregon. The quality of life index here is just off the charts, from Portland’s case of art culture to beautiful coastlines.
Alabama

Would you like to score a good deal? Alabama has some of the lowest prices for housing, and you slow down that much to enjoy family time. In 2023, 119421 people moved to Alabama, citing low living costs as a key reason for their shift.
Wyoming

Wyoming tops the adventurers’ charts for big open spaces, no income tax, and stunningly beautiful nature. About 22,957 people moved to Wyoming in 2023. Although it is quite a small state, it has some mighty appeal, especially for anyone yearning for a tranquil getaway with all sorts of outdoor fun.
