Our Mission
The Finance Key (“TFK”) helps readers in the United States and Canada make smarter money decisions. We publish clear, accurate, and practical guidance across banking, credit, insurance, housing, taxes, benefits, student loans, retirement, small-business money, and consumer protection.
Our Principles
- Accuracy first. Facts and citations must be correct and clearly sourced.
- Independence. Sponsors and partners do not approve, assign, or edit our journalism.
- Transparency. We disclose our sources, methods, and how we make money.
- Accountability. We fix errors promptly; see our Corrections & Updates.
- Respect & inclusion. We avoid sensationalism and use plain language.
- Reader safety. Our content is educational, not personalized advice. See our Disclaimer & Disclosures.
What We Cover
We produce explainers, how-tos, comparisons, state/province guides, calculators, and service journalism tied to changes in laws, rates, or programs in the U.S. and Canada. Location-specific coverage is labeled in the headline, deck, or first paragraph.
Our Editorial Process
- Pitch & assignment — Editors green-light topics for reader impact and data value.
- Research — We prioritize primary sources (laws/regulations, government sites, official filings, first-party data) and reputable secondary sources (major outlets, agencies, academic research).
- Drafting & verification — Claims affecting readers’ money are verified pre-publication; statistics and rates are cross-checked where possible.
- Editing — An editor reviews for clarity, accuracy, sourcing, and compliance with this policy.
- Expert review (as needed) — Sensitive or regulated topics may be reviewed by qualified professionals (e.g., CPA, EA, JD, CFP®, CFA).
- Publication — Articles display an author byline, a Published date, and a visible Updated date when changed.
- Maintenance — We monitor rule changes, refresh evergreen pages, and note material updates per our Corrections & Updates policy.
Sourcing Standards
- Citations. We link sources inline so readers can verify claims.
- Data. We cite dataset owners, time periods, and any transformations.
- Interviews. We prefer on-the-record attribution; anonymity is rare and requires editor approval with justification.
- Conflicting information. When credible sources disagree, we explain the differences and our reasoning.
- Plagiarism. Zero tolerance. Quotes are clearly marked and attributed.
Methodologies and Recommendations
- “Best” picks. Criteria may include cost/fees, availability, safety/insurance (FDIC/CDIC), rewards value, customer experience, and suitability. We summarize methods on comparison pages.
- Hands-on testing. Where feasible, we test products/tools and disclose the level of hands-on evaluation.
- No pay-to-play. Compensation does not determine our editorial verdicts. Partners may influence placement in deal tables or comparison modules; when applicable, we state this on the page.
Monetization and Independence
TFK is funded by advertising and affiliate partnerships. If you click a link and buy/sign up, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Editorial and commercial operations are independent. Sponsored content is labeled “Sponsored” and must meet our accuracy standards. See Disclaimer & Disclosures.
Bylines, Bios, and Credentials
- Articles carry an individual byline when a single writer is the primary author; collaborative, desk-maintained, or substantially updated pieces may use a team byline, such as TFK Team.
- Author pages list relevant credentials and experience.
- Substantial edits or verification may add “Edited by” or “Fact-checked by” lines.
Contributor, Professional, and Team Bylines
Some contributors publish under a professional byline or a team byline. This does not change our editorial standards or accountability.
We use bylines to clearly identify the author or editorial source of each article. Depending on the page, this may be:
- an individual contributor byline,
- an editor byline, or
- a collaborative team byline, such as TFK Team.
We may use the TFK Team byline when:
- multiple contributors worked on a page,
- the editorial desk substantially updated an older article,
- the content is a collaborative service guide or evergreen resource, or
- the original contributor is no longer active, but the page has been reviewed and updated by the editorial team.
All content published under a professional byline or team byline follows The Finance Key’s editorial standards for accuracy, sourcing, transparency, updates, and corrections.
Some contributor profiles may use a branded avatar, team graphic, or brand-created editorial portrait.
For more information, please see our TFK Team Byline Policy and Meet the Team page.
Conflicts of Interest
Contributors disclose financial relationships (employment, consulting, equity, paid speaking) related to their coverage areas. We recuse team members when conflicts could affect independence.
Use of AI and Automation
We may use AI for research assistance, outlines, or first drafts. Every article is edited, fact-checked, and approved by a human before publication. We do not fabricate sources. AI visuals are labeled when used.
Images, Charts, and Assets
We use original visuals, licensed stock, or press assets with permission. Images include visible credits. Charts and tables include a Source line and, when methods are non-obvious, a brief Methodology note.
Corrections and Updates
When we identify a factual error, we fix it quickly and add a Correction note describing what changed and when. Routine refreshes are labeled Update. Full policy: /corrections/.
To request a correction, please use our contact page.
